My name is Gabriela Awad and I am a textile artist based in New York, NY.

I graduated Wellesley College in May 2023 with a B.A. in Studio Art and Middle Eastern Studies. While my work is primarily weaving-based, I have an extensive background in printmaking and other fiber arts.

Through my work, I seek to explore the traditions and histories behind Middle Eastern handicraft. With a particular focus on the Levant, I closely examine the identities of textile-based practices throughout the many Middle Eastern diasporas.

My most recent work, Hilaane’s Rug, is an installation based around a rug that my great-grandmother had in her home in Lebanon. By working with a photograph of the rug, I aim to explore ideas of loss, memory, family, immigration, identity and healing.
