My name is Gabriela Awad and I am a textile artist based in New York, NY.

I graduated Wellesley College in May 2023 with a B.A. in Studio Art and Middle Eastern Studies. While my work is primarily weaving-based, I have a multi-disciplinary background in textiles, sculpture, printmaking, digital art and many other practices.

Through my work, I seek to explore the traditions and histories behind Middle Eastern handicraft. With a particular focus on the Levant, I closely examine the identities of textile-based practices as they travel through family and diaspora.

My most recent work, Hilaane’s Rug, is an installation based around a rug that my great-grandmother had in her home in Lebanon. By working with a photograph of her rug, I aim to explore ideas of loss, memory, identity, and healing.

I currently work at Parson’s School of Design as a Textiles Technician. I support BFA and MFA students pursuing textile-based work, in primarily the weaving, dyeing, knitting and sewing labs.

I am always excited by new opportunities! Feel free to contact me at gabrielaawad06@gmail.com with any inquiries.
